Pickleball Club Mag: What is CityPickle, and what sets it apart?
CityPickle: CityPickle is your city’s home for pickleball, with our roots in New York City. We were New York City’s first dedicated pickleball club and offer seasonal activations at iconic locations like Hudson Yards and Philadelphia’s City Hall. At CityPickle, we’re committed to fostering community. We are all about creating spaces where people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels can connect, whether they’re newcomers or seasoned pros. Across all our locations, we provide the same premium quality, service, programming, and commitment to building a welcoming community for everyone.

PCM: How did the founders of CityPickle get started in pickleball?
CP: Mary Cannon and Erica Desai, both tennis enthusiasts and longtime friends, discovered pickleball during the pandemic. What started as a way to stay active quickly became a passion as they recognized pickleball’s unique ability to bring people of all ages and skill levels together, both on the court and off.
PCM: How did this lead to the creation of CityPickle?
CP: After discovering their love for pickleball, Mary and Erica dreamed of creating a welcoming space in New York City where players of all levels could connect, have fun, and grow with pickleball. In 2021, they launched CityPickle with pop-up courts across the city, quickly gaining popularity. This momentum led to the opening of our 14-court facility at Wollman Rink in Central Park and then our first indoor location in Long Island City.

PCM: What inspired you to build your own pickleball club?
CP: We were inspired by the inclusive, community-driven spirit of pickleball. In a time when loneliness is reaching epidemic levels in America, we see pickleball as an opportunity to foster joy, promote both mental and physical health, and bring people together. Anyone who has played knows how fun and addictive the game is. For urbanites, even amidst a sea of people, it can be difficult to find a sense of community. Pickleball offers a solution!
PCM: What challenges have you faced in creating CityPickle?
CP: Some of our biggest challenges have been navigating New York City’s notoriously tight real estate market. Balancing space limitations while maintaining high standards on the court has required a lot of creativity.
Mother Nature hasn’t made it easy either at our outdoor venues, whether it’s dealing with mudslides, rainstorms, or even the occasional wildlife visitor, we’ve had to adapt and keep things running smoothly!
PCM: What types of programs, events, and classes do you currently offer?
CP: Pickleball is truly for everyone, and our programming reflects that diversity. We offer something for all, from open play and private lessons to kids’ programs, singles’ mixers, LGBTQ+ events, and community gatherings. We also partner with brands to bring unique experiences to life, while supporting causes we’re passionate about, from hurricane relief efforts to programs for individuals with Parkinson’s. Our goal is to make pickleball accessible, inclusive, and impactful.

PCM: What vendors have made the biggest difference for CityPickle?
CP: Our partnerships have enabled us to provide best-in-class equipment and elevate the on-court experience. JOOLA, our official paddle partner, provides top-quality paddles across all our locations. We love the customized design for each location. Franklin, our official pickleball partner, supplies us with all the pickleballs we use on our courts.
Our official healthcare partner, Mount Sinai, has made pickleball accessible to all by sponsoring discounted clinics and free community play, while providing healthcare experts onsite for players to learn about injury prevention and rehabilitation techniques.
PCM: What advice would you give to someone wanting to start a pickleball club?
CP: Prioritize creating an environment where everyone feels welcome, as pickleball’s true appeal lies in its inclusivity. Whether someone is 8 or 88, a super athlete or a beginner, we believe in building a strong sense of community and trusting the sport to bring people together.
