Slate Pickleball Club Creates an Environment of Learning and Luxury

When Sam Arnold and Abe Reese decided to open a pickleball club, they wanted to create a space that provided an experience like no other, and Slate Pickleball Club in Northbrook, Illinois was born.

“We believe coaching and programming is where the magic is,” Sam says. “We pride ourselves on hiring and training great coaches and creating robust programming that serves the needs of all our members on our beautiful seven indoor courts.”

Even though pickleball can be more easily learned than other racquet sports, great lessons are vital to becoming a solid pickleball player with proper biomechanics.

To encourage member growth and minimize the technique gap, Slate utilizes the STAGE methodology (Skill development, Tactics-first, Athlete-centered coaching, Games-based, Elation) as a blueprint for their training. This proven developmental approach reframes mindsets and encourages players to work harder because they are having fun while receiving top-notch instruction needed for their own game.

All Slate coaches participate in a rigorous interview and training process to maintain the club’s high standards and create consistency in lessons and training. They currently employ six coaches full-time, with more most likely on the horizon.

To ensure all members get the most out of programming, Slate offers complimentary evaluations to guide their choices.

Programming includes the Foundations crash-course beginner program, Adult Group Instructional for full player development, Cardio Pickleball for a fun, gamified workout, Level-Based Open Play, unique leagues, and more.

The club believes community is everything and they develop it through programming and a classroom-centric approach.

While not directly related to instruction, one very popular programming option is their BYO league that allows members to book courts with their own “team” to create league play. Many of these leagues are born out of players meeting each other in programming.

Sam says he frequently hears from members that friends comment on how good their game has gotten and ask what the secret is – and it’s Slate!

On top of the impeccable coaching and training, the facilities were designed to create an indoor pickleball experience unlike any other in the area.

The club’s unique appearance can only be described as elevated. A raised observation deck allows players to enjoy a drink before or after a game. The back wall is soft with sound acoustic material to prevent injury and quiet play throughout the club. Each court has its own bar, cup holders, and hangars, making lockers obsolete. Every court has its own speaker for players to use with music of their choice.

“Even though every court has a speaker, only players on that court can hear it,” says Sam. “I’ve had people come up to me and mention one reason they come back is because it feels so good in here. It is warm and organic and everyone is so nice. That’s exactly the vibe we’re after.”

Slate is building a strong member base of 650 and growing, thanks to staying true to its vision of creating a luxurious feeling club based on great coaching, programming, and focusing on people. By investing in staff training, creating clear development pathways for players, and building a culture of fun and improvement, Sam and his team have created a culture that keeps people coming back. And isn’t that what every club wants?
