As one of, if not the fastest growing sport in the United States, pickleball seems to be played in every city and the sport is on everyone’s lips. Membership clubs and recreational leagues have all realized players love to compete through league play, round robins and tournaments. But what is the next step? Triple Team Pickleball League, formerly known as NTPL, has an answer to that question.
Located in St. Augustine, Florida, Old Coast Pickleball Club opened its doors in May of 2024 and has quickly become a hub for Florida pickleballers. Tim and Ashley Owens, owners of Old Coast and founders of Court Reserve, have already been deeply immersed in the pickleball world for years. Tim and Ashley’s experience owning/operating Court Reserve, one of the top management software tools in pickleball, led them towards opening Old Coast. Now, they set their sights on serving the pickleball community by playing host.
What do you call a pickleball club that offers classes seven days a week? The Pickleball Club of Carlsbad, California.
PBC’s business model is different than many other clubs. As owner Shawn Walker describes it, programming is their offense.
“When I first started playing pickleball, I showed up, paid a fee and that was it,” Shawn said. “I wanted something different for my club and for me, that was focusing on the new players and in turn creating a welcoming and fun atmosphere.”
On a mission to create connections between all types of people and enrich the lives of others through Pickleball, Pickles, located in Hanover, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston, has differentiated themselves from other clubs by partnering with a local physical therapy (PT) clinic to provide in-house rehabilitation and injury prevention services to players. Their facility, all completely indoors, features six tournament sized courts, two dinking practice courts, “The Kitchen,” which serves pre-packaged snacks and beverages including beer/wine, a retail shop, and a player’s recovery lounge which houses the PT. Each of these aspects of the club serve specific purposes which contribute to Pickles’ overall prioritization of member health and enjoyment of the sport.
The year was 2020. As the world sought new ways to stay social safely, who knew that pickleball would emerge as such a strong national pastime?
The Madison Area Sports Commission did.
“We were on hiatus from hosting IRONMAN Wisconsin, a world-class event we’d welcomed since 2002,” says Brandon Holstein, Senior Sports Account Manager at the Madison Area Sports Commission (MASC). “As much as we missed bringing thousands of IRONMAN athletes and fans to our capital city, it gave us time to explore what sports were trending—and where Madison’s offerings may have been lacking. We knew pickleball was rising in popularity and the Professional Pickleball Association had just been established, so we got to work.”
